Bolivia

A small, landlocked country in South America, Bolivia encompasses dense tropical jungle in the Amazonian Plain and high Andes mountain regions. Remnants of the Inca civilization and the Spanish conquistadors abound throughout the country. With its altitude of over 3,600 meters (11,900 feet), La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. The popular tourist destination of Lake Titicaca lies at 3,800 m (12,500 feet).

Weather and temperatures vary greatly with altitude and season. Most rain falls during summer, November-March. The coldest months are June-August. May-June and August-November provide the best conditions for a visit to Bolivia.

Approximately two-thirds of the population is Native American; most of the rest of the people are a mixture of Native American and European. There are small percentages of people of Japanese and African descent. Spanish, Quechua and Aymara are the official languages.

Due to the difficult terrain and generally poor roads, air travel is the best way to get around within the country, with inexpensive air service available to all major cities and towns. Buses and rental cars are also an option, though poor roads make road travel difficult, especially in the rainy season. Vehicles are driven on the right. The telecommunications infrastructure is modern, with full international direct dialing available.

Bolivia is a democracy, with a strong president. It is one of the poorest countries in South America, with nearly half the people employed in agriculture.

Both property and personal crime rates are high in Bolivia. There is a continuing conflict between the government and indigenous groups, which has at times turned violent. Travelers are not singled out, but may be victimized by crime.
