Botswana

Following 80 years as a British protectorate, The Republic of Botswana gained independence in 1966. Forty years later it remains to this day an example of a successful African democracy.

Botswana is a landlocked country, bordered by Zambia and Zimbabwe to the northeast, Namibia to the north and west, and South Africa to the south and southeast. Botswana is located in the southern African region and about two-thirds of the country lies within the Tropics. 80% of the country’s population lives in the eastern part with many living in the urban areas such as Gaborone, the capital.

The country, which is about the size of Texas, has a semi-arid climate. The weather is generally hot and dry with a rainy season during the summer months of November through March.

The national air carrier is Air Botswana which offers service to Gaborone. Most tourists arrive via South Africa.

Tourism is a major industry with over 800,000 annual visitors coming to see the natural wonders and African wildlife. Safaris are popular and there are numerous tour operators. There are a number of accommodation options throughout the country.

Tourists should remain alert to petty crime and avoid traveling alone or in unfamiliar areas. Follow the latest health advisories.
